Your computer is hanging. Same old Windows, right? Except you’re using a brand new Windows 8.x or Windows 10 device; you’ve only had it a few days. So just what is going on?

Investigating, you discover that your system drive is running at 100%. Surely this can’t be right? Sadly, it is. The latest versions of Windows have a problem with the drives being over worked, which slows down the operating system. This issue affects both hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs).

Several fixes are available for this, depending upon what exactly is causing the problem.

Never heard of PCI express firmware bug. Still don't know what it is! My laptop has been almost useless for months with 100% disc usage. Tried lots of "fixes". Nothing worked. I was very cautious with this fix being labelled as advanced. My knowledge of computing amounts to switching on clearing history and turning off! Anyway I followed your instructions. Got lost a couple of times but got there in the end. After what seemed like an hour rebooting…..it works!!! Disc usage now consistently <10%. Laptop like new. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

  37. OislamforallO1 says

I had that issue and I almost fixed it. My laptop is 6 years old. But It is i7 and 6 gb of ram. According to what I've read, old hdd hardisks are weak to handle today softwares. So, it is better to stay with old "operating system". The 100% diskusage happened to me a lot on windows 10, so i thought there's something wrong with that. This is a role, the best opearting system is that comes with the laptop its self, which is windows 8.1 in my case. So, I formated my laptop back to windows 8.1 home, not pro, because pro versions are having more featuers you don't need, also Old hardware can't handle them. This is my advice and I hope it helps you. Now my hardisk usage hits 100%, but when I check task manager I figuerd that the secuirty program is running a scan or there's a real pressure on the hardisk, now it makes sense.
