In this tutorial, I will be demonstrating a number of ways to fix the problem of 100% disk usage in Windows, especially Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Some typical signs of this problem include an obvious slowdown in the overall performance of your windows, system lags, unresponsive apps and processes, disk utilization percentage nearing or consistently on 100%, unusually loud noise from the cooling fan as if your processor or graphics card is under extreme use. The following suggestions were covered in this video:

1. Disable Windows Search Service
2. Check your disk defragmentation configuration
3. Update your device drivers
4. Disable Superfetch
5. Reset Virtual Memory
6. Check the configuration of your AHCI PCIe
7. Disable Windows Update Service
8. Disable Automatic Windows Update Service:

If everything fails, you might consider backing up your files and reinstalling Windows. If you set to do that, you can check the procedure I showed in this video:
on how to back up your files before installing a fresh copy of Windows.

Written instructions for some of this suggestions can be found from Minitool:

  2. During the command prompt solution, if it gives you the message "The service name [superfetch] is invalid," just type "net.exe stop sysmain" instead.

  3. Guys!
    I'm very disappointed… I spent 1400 EUR on a notebook and I can not use it because of this… disk 100% usage…

I reinstalled my windows (origonal windows using a normal HDD not SSD/ 1TB) I did everything… I was checking info about this in the last 5 months …. I saw almost all the videos on youtube about this topic… for me none of them helped.

Anyway thanks for sharing this video. There were some new stuff I've not tried before but still notw working.

Does anyone have any idea what can I do in a situation like this? I need windows for specific stowares. Obviously I wont spend more money on anew laptop….

Thanks for any tips in advance.

  4. why is mine saying Service host local system when I click on the 100% disk? It shows stuffs working and labelled as red… ps my disk hops from 12% and back to 100%

  5. I have two 8+ year old Acer Aspire laptops. This week i finally got rid of the disk 100% problem on both of them by running the Windows Updates. Earlier this didn't work but now it does!

Make sure that they have a proper internet connection and use a cable connection if possible. Keep an eye on them and make sure that they don't go into sleep mode and that they can restart to install the updates. Change the active hours so that the laptop can reboot itself almost the whole day. 1:00 -2:00 AM for example.

Make sure to to check on the laptops every once in a while to see if a manual restart is necessary. It took more than a day for my laptops since they were incredibly slow. But now they are running fine again!

  7. I have a problem with Disable Superfetch, when I enter it in cmd it shows me , The service name is invalid. anyone can help with that ?

  8. Thanks a lot! At first my laptop was laggy and now its working smoothly.I think because of disk%.It was 100%. But now solved.☺☺

  9. I hear the reason (win 10) is because your memory isn't clearing fast enough and cloging up the disk. I was told there is a program to fix this issue (the program clears your temperary memory instead of windows doing it for you) but i have no idea what the program was called. If anyone knows what im talking about please let me know! Thanks!

  10. When i dont have anything opened my hard drive is 0% usage but when i open a game it goes up to a 100% is that the hard drives problem, or windows problem?

  11. Guys when I reach the safe boot screen the mouse and keyboard stops now I can't do anything. Please someone help me!!!!!😭😭

  12. Issue was Sysmain (super fetch) thank you so much this saved me. Just a suggestion, put a note in the video explaining that its now called sysmain. That cost me an extra 30 minutes to figure that out myself, when I saw sysmain using up the whole disk space the whole time
